Notes

Text
A text interface was the very first type of application available. You had to actually type in the command lines without mistake, and if you made an error, you had to erase what you had already typed.

Text & Menus
The addition of menus was an improvement on text applications. Using keys to move around the screen made it a lot easier than having to type commands. Arrow keys are used to move up and down; enter is used to select the command, and the ALT key in combination with various numbers brings up menus.

Graphical
A graphical user interface (GUI) uses pictures to make everything simpler and easier for the user. Drop down menus, windows and icons are now standard.

Word Processing
Word processing is the application used most often and widely. It is easy to edit and change. Word Processing applications have replaced typewriters.

Desktop Publishing
Desktop publishing applications are much like word processors, but with better and more precise control over the layout, placements, etc.

Spread Sheet
An application used to organize numbers. This is useful for financial statments, grade sheets and budgets.

Database
A database is a collection of data you want to organize and manage. This is useful for things that are not entirely numbers, such as addresses and inventories.

Graphics

Graphic programs deal with flat, 3D, static or moving images. It gives you complete control of editing and creating the image.

Presentations

Presentations are used to enhance speeches, etc. They link together slides containing images and text.

Communications

These programs are used to make a temporary connection between computers to share information.

Browser
Internet browsers let you navigate WWW or view HTML from external hardware like CDs or floppy disks.

Webpages
A webpage is a page of information on the WWW. They are written in Hyper Text Markup Language.

Email
Is used to transmit messages between computer users.

Project Management
A progect management application tracks projects, users and deadlines.

PIM
PIM (Personal Information Management) is a type of database for storing personal information like contacts, addresses.

Integrated & Suites

A combination of the functions of several programs onto one interface.

Web 2.0

What is Web 2?

A term referring to interactive web development and design.

Give some examples of Web 2, and explain the purpose of each one.

  • Bittorrent; used for filesharing.
  • Napster; mp3 filesharing.
  • Flickr; sharing photos.
What is a wiki?

A website allowing visitors to easily add/edit content.

How are blogs and wikis the same? How are they different?

Blogs and wikis are similar in that you can edit; they are different because in a blog, the visitor cannot edit posts you have written on your own blog.

Who writes wikipedia? Do you think you can trust it? Why/why not?

Wikipedia is written by visitors. You can trust it sometimes, if the information has listed a reputable source, but other times it is just filled with incorrect information and things people have made up.

What is Flickr useful for?

Sharing and showing photos/videos, seeing other peoples photos and videos.

What is delicious?

A social tagging and bookmarking site.

Carbon Copy

What is CC?

Carbon Copy is an e-mail term. It means to copy the e-mail and send it to multiple people.

What does it stand for?

Carbon Copy.

Where does the term come from?

Maybe typewriting.

When would you use it?

When you wanted to e-mail lots of people.

What about BCC?

This means 'Blind Carbon Copy', and it hides the addresses of the other people you're e-mailing.
